Eurocopter X3 – Development, Specifications and Utilities

The Eurocopter X3, or popularly known as the X-cube, is a compound helicopter under experimental development by Eurocopter. Being the leader in the military and civil helicopter manufacturing, Eurocopter aims at a high aircraft performance for all utilities, and masters the innovation efficiently. The Eurocopter X3 is a milestone in the helicopter industry and is based on the concept of innovative rotary-wing aircraft. While still under development and flight testing procedure, the Eurocopter X3 is believed to reach the peak performance and efficiency in no time.

The Design and Development of Eurocopter X3

The Eurocopter X3 is an experimental helicopter venture of the Eurocopter manufacturing company, and took its first flight on 6th September 2010. The basic X3 demonstrator is based on the design and development concept of the Eurocopter EC155, and comes with an added specification of short span wings integrated with a tractor propeller. The helicopter is well-equipped with two turboshaft engines that power the main rotor system having five blades. This unique combination offers advanced transportation system with the flight efficiency of a helicopter and speed of a turboprop-powered aircraft. Eurocopter X3 was developed to prove the concept of a high speed helicopter that depends on the rotor speed to avoid dragging from the front blade tip. In fact, it is so designed that even the flight duration, operational cost and success of the mission depends directly on the maximum cruise speed of the helicopter. The Eurocopter X3 is a perfect combination of wonderful landing capabilities and takeoff with a high cruise speed of almost 220Kts.

Important specifications of Eurocopter X3

Eurocopter X3, the milestone in Eurocopter’s venture in high speed utility helicopters, comes with some unique specifications and features that make this a perfect combination of a fast speed aircraft and an efficient helicopter. This helicopter supports two Rolls-Royce Turbomeca RTM322 turboshaft engines, each having power of 1693 KW. These two turboshaft engines power the main rotor system having five blades, with two tractor propellers on the short span wings. This ensures gear driven flight off the main engines. With a number of flight testing and milestone setting, the Eurocopter X3 has achieved a miraculous speed of 220 knots, which is almost 407 km/hr. This speed is indeed unbelievable for small helicopters, and thus this is a great instance of a perfect combination of an efficient takeoff and landing helicopter with the high speed of an aircraft. The Eurocopter aims at achieving higher speed levels for fast and efficient utility service. Moreover, the Eurocopter X3 can fly with a service ceiling of almost 12500 feet, thus, making it more apt for difficult situations as well.

Utilities of Eurocopter X3

The development of Eurocopter X3 was envisaged for various civil and military missions that cannot be efficiently performed by other helicopters and aircrafts. Eurocopter X3 missions include coast guard duties, distant search and rescue missions, passenger transportation, troop transportation, border patrolling, Special Forces’ operations, medical evacuation, and much more. Thus, Eurocopter X3 is ought to be highly beneficial for military and civil utilities.
